Make Your Reels & Shorts Pop: The Power of Text

·6 min read·Yasmin Laaguid

Hey there! Be honest: how many videos do you scroll past daily on Instagram, TikTok, or YouTube Shorts? I know, it's an absolute flood. And that's precisely why it's so crucial for your videos to stand out. Not just with amazing visuals and sharp cuts, but also with something we sometimes overlook: great on-screen text and perfectly crafted captions.

As a video editor, I see daily how creators struggle to capture attention. And believe me, one of the easiest (and most effective!) ways to do that is by using text intelligently. Whether your audience has sound on or off, text can be the difference between a quick swipe and someone who stops and stays. And that's exactly what we want, isn't it?

Why Text Is Essential for Your Short-Form Videos

Let's start with the 'why'. Why should you even bother with text in videos that often flash by so quickly? Well, there are a few very good reasons:

  • Accessibility: Not everyone watches videos with sound on. Think of people on public transport, at work, or simply those who prefer no sound. With good captions and on-screen text, they can still follow your content. That's not just convenient; it's inclusive.
  • Grabbing Attention: Before the sound even starts (or if people are scrolling through), on-screen text can grab their attention. A catchy phrase, a question, or even just a description of what's coming can make people stop scrolling and actually watch.
  • Enhancing Understanding: Sometimes your video's message is complex, or it moves so fast that text becomes a welcome addition. It can highlight specific points, reiterate key takeaways, or provide explanations that might otherwise get lost in the rapid pace.
  • SEO and Discoverability: While this applies more to the captions beneath your video, we sometimes forget that search engines (and the platforms' own algorithms) also analyze text. Good, relevant captions with the right keywords can ensure your videos are found more easily.

So, it's not just a nice-to-have; it's an absolute must-have if you want your videos to be effective.

Captions: The Unsung Heroes Beneath Your Video

Okay, we're talking about captions below your video and text on your screen. Let's break them down, as they both serve slightly different functions.

The captions below your video are those short pieces of text you add as a description. Think of them as the subtitles of your life, but written by you. Here are a few tips for captions that I share with my creators:

  • Write with Purpose: What do you want people to do after watching your video? Do you want them to comment, visit your profile, or check out a product? End your caption with a clear 'call to action'.
  • Use Relevant Hashtags: Do your homework! Which hashtags are popular and relevant to your niche? They act as signposts for people looking for content like yours.
  • Make It Readable: Use short paragraphs, bullet points, or emojis to break up your text. Nobody enjoys reading a giant block of text. Make it visually appealing.
  • Put the Most Important Info First: Sometimes your caption gets cut off after a few lines. Make sure the most crucial information is immediately visible, so people click through to read the rest.
  • Spark Curiosity: Ask a question, share a funny anecdote, or offer a sneak peek of what your video has to offer.

A common mistake I see is creators using their caption simply to repeat what's in the video. What a missed opportunity! Use that space to provide extra value, deepen your story, or start a conversation with your community.

On-Screen Text: Giving Your Video an Extra Voice

Then there's on-screen text, the text I place directly onto your footage during editing. This is where we can really get creative! Think of titles, key takeaways, quotes, or even just contextual information that enriches your video. Here's how we approach it effectively:

  • Choose the Right Font: The font should match your brand and the video's mood. Is it fun and playful? Or serious and informative? The choice of font speaks volumes.
  • Contrast and Readability: This might sound obvious, but ensure the text is clearly legible against the background. Use contrasting colors, a subtle background box, or a drop shadow. Nothing is more frustrating than text you can't read!
  • Timing Is Everything: The text needs to stay on screen long enough for people to read it, but not so long that it becomes boring or obscures the rest of the visuals. I make sure the timing is perfect so it doesn't disrupt your video's flow.
  • Keep It Short and Punchy: Short videos demand short sentences. Use only the most essential words. On-screen text isn't there to tell a whole story, but to emphasize key points.
  • Make It Dynamic: The text doesn't have to be static. We can add movement, have it fly in and out, or appear at critical moments. This makes it visually engaging and holds attention. I achieve this with motion graphics in post-production.
  • Translate Voice-Over: If you have a voice-over, it's often a good idea to display the most important sentences as on-screen text. This makes your video accessible to everyone.

What I sometimes see is people stuffing too much text onto the screen. Remember: less is more. Every piece of text you add should have a reason and contribute to the message, not distract from it.

A Practical Example from My Work

Recently, I worked for a creator who explained complex topics, like AI. Her videos were super informative, but due to the fast pace and many technical terms, they were sometimes difficult to follow. What did we do?

We added the main definitions and core points as on-screen text, often with a bolded term and a brief explanation. The captions below the video were used to ask an interactive question and include relevant links. The result? Many more comments, longer watch times, and viewers saying they could now follow the videos much better, even without sound. It works!

So, the next time you're planning your Reels or Shorts, don't just think about the visuals and sound; also give text the attention it deserves. It's a small effort with a huge impact on viewer engagement. And if you need help with this, you know where to find me. I'd love to help your story, with the right words, truly resonate.
