Making Your Video Editor Happy: How to Deliver Footage
Preparation is Half the Battle, Seriously!
Hey there! As a freelance video editor, I see a lot of raw footage come my way. And you know, how you deliver that footage truly makes a world of difference. Not just for me, but especially for you. It saves time, money, and a lot of back-and-forth emails. A smooth workflow is golden, and it begins even before I open my editing software. Let's dive into what perfect preparation looks like for us to create an amazing video together!
The Basics: Raw Footage and Audio
Okay, this might sound obvious, but it's the absolute number one priority. Make sure I have access to all the raw video footage and its corresponding audio. I could say, 'ALL of it,' but what exactly does that entail?
1. All Video Recordings, Unprocessed and in Original Quality
Please provide me with the original files, exactly as they came straight from the camera. No downloaded WhatsApp videos, no converted files, but the actual source files. Why? Because that gives me the maximum quality to work with. Think about resolution (4K, 1080p, etc.), frame rate (24fps, 25fps, 50fps), and color profiles (flat profiles like S-Log, C-Log, V-Log). These 'flat' images give me the most freedom to beautifully color grade your video, making the colors pop and ensuring the mood is just right.
I often get asked, 'And which files exactly should I send?' Simple: all the video clips that were recorded. It's better to send too much than too little. I'll sort out what's usable. It would be a shame if that one perfect shot was missing because you thought it wasn't necessary.
2. All Original Audio Recordings
This is just as important, perhaps even more so, than the visuals! Whether it's audio recorded via the camera, or (even better) audio from an external microphone, make sure I have everything. Separate audio files from, for example, a lavalier microphone or a shotgun microphone are essential for professional sound. Without good, clear audio, even the most beautiful video can fall flat. I'll synchronize this separate audio with the footage and get the most out of it through sound design and mixing. Removing noise, clarifying voices, reducing reverb, that kind of work.
Extras That Turbocharge the Process
Beyond the raw footage and audio, there are a few things that make my editing heart sing and truly elevate your project to the next level:
3. A Clear Brief or Wishlist
This is crucial! Tell me the goal of the video. Who is it for? What message needs to come across? Do you have specific preferences regarding style, pace, or atmosphere? Perhaps you have examples of videos you love, or conversely, ones you definitely don't. The more specific you are here, the closer I can get to your vision. Don't just say 'make it cool,' but explain what you find cool. For a YouTube video, you might want a fast-paced, dynamic style with lots of cuts and visuals, while a commercial might require a sleek, storytelling approach. Every detail helps!
4. Music Preferences and Voice-Overs
If you already know what music you want to use (and have the rights for it, of course), please send it along! The same goes for voice-overs. If you've already recorded a voice-over yourself, or would like me to record one (I can help you with this), provide the script and, if available, a rough recording. Music and voice-overs largely determine the mood and pace of the edit, so the sooner I have them, the better I can adapt the footage to match.
5. Logos, Titles, Outros, and Other Brand Assets
Do you want your logo or brand colors to be featured? Then send your logo in high resolution (preferably a .png or .ai file with a transparent background) and, if applicable, your brand colors and fonts. Do you already have an intro or outro animation? Fantastic! Send that over too. This ensures a professional and consistent look and feel, which is especially important for your YouTube channel or social media.
6. Structure or Timecodes (If You Have Them)
Did you make notes during filming about what was said at what moment? Or shots you definitely want to use or avoid? Brilliant! A simple text file with timecodes and comments (for example: “00:15, 00:30: This part about product X is important” or “01:10: This shot with the flower is perfect as an opening”) can help tremendously. It saves me searching and ensures I don't overlook any important moments. This isn't mandatory, but it can truly speed up the turnaround time.
How to Deliver Your Files?
Sending large files can sometimes be a challenge. My preference is for platforms like WeTransfer, Google Drive, Dropbox, or potentially a hard drive if we're talking about truly massive amounts of data. In any case, make sure the files are well-organized in folders (for example, 'video', 'audio', 'logos', 'music'). This makes it easier for me to quickly find what I need.
Good preparation truly is the key to a successful collaboration and a final result we can both be proud of.
